West Side Story - March 18-April 3, 2010

Directed by Jamie J Bourget

Theatre Cambrian's executive director, Mark Mannisto, announced today that tickets for the Company's musical-theatre spectacular, West Side Story, are now on sale. “West Side Story marks a highly anticipated production by our audiences,” states Mannisto. “It is a musical-theatre classic that never grows old and always had an audience.”

Its Romeo & Juliet updated to 1957; now it’s the white Jets against the Puerto Rican Sharks in New York City. Former Jet co-leader Tony, who’s looking for more in his life than fights, goes to a dance at the urging of current Jet leader Riff and immediately falls in love with Maria, the much-protected sister of Bernardo, the Sharks’ leader. Bernardo’s girlfriend, Anita, warns Maria that trouble is brewing. When a fight breaks out that Tony intended to stop, Bernardo kills Riff, and Tony instinctively kills Bernardo. Maria, though devastated, stays by Tony; but her would-be suitor Chino eventually settles the score. The Sharks and the Jets come to realize that they must look for solutions other than fighting for their problems. The production is one of the most sought-after productions in the Broadway musical catalogue. The first production broke new ground as so much was conveyed in music, including the enormous reliance upon dance to tell plot—not just upon songs stuck into a book. A production of West Side Story met with great critical and audience acclaim in Stratford this past season, and the Broadway revival is presently breaking box-office records in New York. Songs such as “Maria,” “Tonight,” “America,” One Hand, One Heart,” and “Somewhere” are some of the most recognizable songs in musical theatre and have been performed by the music industry's biggest stars.

West Side Story runs March 18-April 3, 2010. Tickets are $26.50 for adults, $21.50 for students & seniors and $16.50 for children 13 and up. Tickets can be purchased at Records on Wheels, Jett Landry Music, Azilda Rexall, and Vrabs Your Independent Grocer. You may also reserve with VISA or MasterCard at 524-7317.
