Theatre Cambrian brings first annual dinner-theatre festival to Sudbury!

Sudbury - Theatre Cambrian's executive director, Mark Mannisto, announced today that tickets are now on sale for the Company's first annual dinner-theatre festival. “We are extremely excited to offer audiences a chance to participate in dinner theatre in a festival setting,” states Mannisto. “We are offering three different dinner-theatre productions—one on Friday, one on Saturday, and one on Sunday afternoon—we are offering the festival over two weekends - January 15, 16, 17 and January 22, 23, 24.”

Theatre Cambrian’s dinner-theatre festival is comprised of three hilarious comedies. Friday evenings, audiences can enjoy William Van Zandt & Jane Milmore’s Playing Doctor. Rob Brewster’s parents are very, very proud of their son, the doctor. What they don’t know is that Rob has used all the money they gave him for medical school to pursue his fledgling writing career. Inevitably, Rob’s day of reckoning comes when his parents arrive for a visit. Quickly, he enlists the help of his secretary to be his nurse and his roommate Jimmy to round up his actor friends to pretend to be patients. Complications ensue when Jimmy decides he is such a good actor that he can impersonate all the patients - with the help of a trunk of costumes and bad dialects! The authors have written some zany farces, but this one may just be their zaniest. It is great fun to perform and great fun to see. Playing Doctor will cure the winter blahs!

On Saturday evenings, audiences will be treated to the saucy comedy, Jenny’s House of Joy. Jenny runs the best little house of ill repute in her corner of the old “Wild West.” But when a tireless young runaway comes begging for a job, the girls at Jenny’s house face leaving their days of lingerie behind. This is a delightful comedy about the oldest profession. Although we do get to know Earl and Cecil and the other good old boys who visit Jenny Starbuck’s Baxter Springs brothel, it’s strictly through the eyes of the spirited women who walk them up that flight of stairs to three-buck heaven. So when smart-mouthed old Frances, genteel little Anita, and butter-wouldn’t-melt-in-her mouth Natalie let fly with the caustic remarks about the fly-by-night bed mates who keep them up nights, we certainly take notice. Along the way, too, we learn a lot about these hard-workin’ gals and the way they bond between stints in Jenny’s upstairs rooms. Beat the January cold with the hot, hilarious comedy, Jenny’s House of Joy!

Sunday afternoons, audiences will be given the opportunity to take part in the true-to-life comedy, The Foursome. The Foursome has become a favoured heart-warming comedy for theatrical groups all over Canada. Four old university friends meet up at their 15-year class reunion. After attending the function, they get together for a game of golf. What happens when four old friends get together after so many years apart? A very comical look at the teasing, old rivalries, beer-drinking, catching up on the last 15 years, and reminiscing about old school days, successes and failures – that’s what! Can these characters take up again after 15 years...or must old friends remain just that... old? Come to the show and find out - it’s a warm, funny play that takes place entirely on the 18 tees of a golf course. What better place to spend an afternoon in January than on the golf course?

“ This festival would not have been able to happen if it were not for the generous support we have received from the Government of Ontario, The Ontario Cultural Attractions Fund, and the City of Greater Sudbury,” states Mannisto. “It is nice to see various levels of government coming on board to support the arts and cultural scene in the Province of Ontario,” he adds.
